Job Description

Working under the direction of the volunteer Steering Committee and issue committee, each position is responsible for building membership, developing leaders, helping plan issue campaigns, fundraising and mobilizing members to take action. Some administrative, office management, fundraising and related volunteer coordination duties are also required. This is an organizing job, with irregular hours, including evenings and weekends. Areas of responsibility:
25% Membership recruitment and base-building (one-on-ones, doorknocking, house visits, setting up house meetings, etc)
25% Issue committee staffing and campaigning
20% Member development and mobilization including: turn-out calls, volunteer coordination, organizing and managing phone trees, etc.
15% Non-dues fundraising: ad sales, grassroots events, etc.
15% Other org needs as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience: At least 3 years
Skills: - Minimum of three (3) years professional grassroots organizing experience.
- Solid commitment to social and economic justice.
- Familiarity with policy/issue area (either housing/tenant or jobs/worker justice)
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to work independently under the guidance of volunteer committees in a well-organized way toward goals.
- A strong ability to motivate people, coordinate volunteer activity and delegate responsibility.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
- Basic office skills (word processing, databases, spreadsheets)
- Ability to speak Spanish is a plus. Persons of color, LGBT persons encouraged to apply.

Organization Description

Action for Justice is a multi-issue grassroots organization made up of low and moderate income people working together for community empowerment and social and economic justice. Action for Justice supports universal human rights, addresses the root causes of poverty, promotes community development without displacement and mobilizes members for mutual support and campaigns for social and economic justice. NA4J is hiring 2 part-time organizers, each to staff the following issue areas:
• affordable housing and tenants’ rights
• jobs, worker rights and economic justice.
