ABOUT THE JOB
The Speech, Privacy and Technology Project is dedicated to protecting and expanding the First Amendment freedoms of expression, association, and inquiry; expanding the right to privacy and increasing the control that individuals have over their personal information; and ensuring that civil liberties are enhanced rather than compromised by new advances in science and technology. The project is currently litigating cases and conducting other advocacy efforts on a variety of issues, including political protest, freedom of expression online, privacy of electronic information, journalists’ rights, scientific freedom, and openness in the courts.

The Speech, Privacy, and Technology (SPT) Project of the ACLU’s National office in New York City seeks applications for the full-time position of Paralegal. The Paralegal is responsible for a wide range of supporting activities, from cite-checking and filing legal pleadings to conducting factual research to assisting professional staff with travel and reimbursements.



RESPONSIBILITIES
• Maintain and organize professional and user-friendly office filing system
• Schedule meetings and conference calls, and prepare relevant materials
• Fax, copy, mail and complete other general administrative duties as assigned
• Respond to requests for legal assistance and ensure timely responses to inquiries; utilize and maintain the intake database
• Collect, analyze, and organize legal, factual, social science and other non-legal research for use in litigation documents and policy presentations; conduct searches on internal and external document databases and systems, cull relevant information from a variety of resources such as newspapers, magazines, libraries, case documents and trade associations
• Handle travel arrangements and expense reports
• Handle special projects and other duties as assigned
• Assist with cite checking, editing, formatting, producing, and serving litigation documents
• Maintain case files, attorney correspondence files, databases, litigation docket and calendar, and timekeeping system
• Act as liaison between Staff Attorneys and Legal Administrative Assistants to disseminate work assigned by attorneys and provide routine and/or procedural guidance regarding work assignments
• Provide administrative support for the managers’ review of applications for Legal Administrative Assistant and intern positions
• Work jointly with interns and communicate routine and/or procedural guidance on projects assigned by managers
• Assist in the development and maintenance of SPT-related portions of the ACLU website

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree or 2 years related administrative experience is preferred
• Must have excellent organizational skills and be detail-oriented
• Excellent research and writing skills
• Must take initiative, be highly organized and detail-oriented, and possess strong interpersonal and time-management skills
• Ability to work independently as well as within a team


COMPENSATION
Salary for this position is $61,040. Excellent benefits package provided.
