OVERVIEW
The Reproductive Freedom Project of the ACLU’s National office in New York City seeks applications for a full-time Paralegal. The Paralegal will work with attorneys from the Reproductive Freedom Project, as well as provide support to staff from the National Political and Advocacy Department (NPAD) working on state legislation.

The Project’s mission is to secure a world that respects and supports every person’s right to form intimate relationships and to decide whether and when to have a child, and where all people have the resources and tools to access the health care they need to effectuate these decisions. Through litigation, advocacy, and public education, the ACLU strives to ensure that the freedoms and opportunities enjoyed by some become the freedoms and opportunities enjoyed by all. The ACLU is particularly committed to ensuring that individuals’ access to reproductive health care is not compromised because of their race, immigration or economic status, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability or where they live. Further, we recognize that people lead intersectional lives and believe that this work must be informed by broader racial and social justice considerations.

For four decades, the ACLU has been a leader in the efforts to reduce the shame and stigma around abortion and ensure that every person has access to safe, affordable abortion care in their communities. The ACLU has participated in nearly every reproductive rights case before the Supreme Court and in significant cases in federal and state courts too numerous to count.

Below are just a few examples of current cases:
• A challenge to the Trump Administration’s policy that bars immigrant minors like our client, Jane Doe, from obtaining abortions;
• A federal constitutional challenge to Kentucky’s efforts to shut down the last abortion clinic in the state;
• State constitutional cases seeking to restore Medicaid coverage for abortion in 2 states;
• Federal constitutional challenges to abortions bans in 3 states; and
• Cases seeking to expand the availability and accessibility of abortion care.

In addition, the NPAD team is working closely with our state affiliates to decriminalize abortion, shore up protections for abortion rights in state law, and expand access to abortion care. The team also provides resources, technical assistance, and support to affiliates that are fending off attacks on abortion rights and access, such as bans on abortion at various points in pregnancy, including as early as 6 weeks; restrictions on different kinds of abortion methods; and clinic shut-down laws. The ACLU is unique among reproductive rights organizations in that it works with the ACLU’s nationwide network of state affiliates as well as attorneys and advocates in the organization who specialize in areas such as immigrants’ rights, racial justice, LGBT rights, disability rights, and freedom of speech and religion.

The Paralegal will attend regular staff meetings and will have the opportunity to learn about current threats to reproductive rights and justice in states across the country and the legal landscape for challenging them, as well as opportunities to expand access to reproductive health care.
